Announced on 7 June 2010 and on sale on 24 June, the iPhone 4 introduced the 960-by-640 Retina display, a front camera for FaceTime video calls, a 5-megapixel camera with 720p video, and a glass-and-steel design whose exposed antenna lost signal when gripped a certain way, the affair known as Antennagate.
Apple sold 1.7 million iPhone 4s in the first three days. The stainless-steel band doubled as the antenna, and reports that bridging a gap in the lower left corner dropped bars led to a July press conference where Apple offered free cases. iOS 4, released three days before the phone, added multitasking, folders and a unified inbox.
In the United States the phone was still exclusive to AT&T, which had just ended unlimited data plans for new customers, so most iPhone 4 owners lived on a 2 GB monthly allowance.
